A Solid Academic Pedigree
Dr. Brown has a long and strong academic pedigree. Scott studied biology and biochemistry at Indiana University with the intent of taking over his father’s three optometry practices in Burney, Fall River Mills and McCloud in Northern California.
At the age of nineteen Scott’s father died.
That was when Scott decided that finance was his true passion. He finished a master of international management degree from the most prestigious institution in the area on the planet, Thunderbird Graduate School of International Management in Glendale, Arizona.
This gave him a firm grounding in international investments and Forex.
The prestige of his degree resulted in his selection and inclusion in an important GSE Rotary Exchange between the São Paulo, Brazil and Northern California districts. Dr. Brown moved to the island of Puerto Rico after his Rotary service in Brazil.
Scott successfully operated a produce receivership in the Caribbean by undercutting local distributors. He sold full refrigerated forty foot containers directly to the major supermarket chains full of fresh produce from the fields of California, The United States, Canada Mexico and Chile. Dr. Brown business specialized in iceberg lettuce, tomatoes, potatoes, onions, strawberries, bananas. He also specialized in cruise ship mixed containers full of dozens of diverse commodities presenting complex perishability problems from the emission of ethylene gas.
Scott represented Chiquita Banana in the United States Virgin Islands selling directly from their plantations in the Dominican Republic near the border of Haiti.
A Foundation in Futures Trading
Dr. Brown began trading futures to diversify risk through cross hedging.
This generated an invitation to teach business at the University of Puerto Rico on the main campus in Rio Piedras. Dr. Brown quickly became a popular professor and was invited to pursue a Ph.D. in finance. Scott finished his Ph.D. at the University of South Carolina.
His finance doctoral dissertation, "Slippage and the Choice of Market Versus Limit Orders in the Futures Markets" was sponsored by the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT).
The doctorate in finance is highly mathematical and widely considered the most difficult in the social science. As returning faculty member holding a valuable degree Doctor Brown has been influential in the awarding of accreditation by the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business).
This is the most prestigious of accreditation bodies. Less than 5% of business schools world-wide are accredited by the AACSB.
A Prominent Researcher
Dr. Brown publishes in prominent academic journals in the field of finance. This includes his work on market micro-structure. See Brown, Scott, Tim Koch, and Eric Powers, 2009, Slippage and the Choice of Market or Limit Orders in Futures Trading, Journal of Financial Research 32, 309-336. This work showed that most of the time market orders are best for entry and exits. Slippage is not a serious problem in liquid futures markets. This is a surprise to many traders. Then Dr. Brown co-authored an important piece on price impact. See Brown, Scott, Jose Julian-Cao, and Eric Powers, 2013, Do Investment Newsletters Move Markets? Financial Management 42, 315-338. This research shows that newsletter recommendations do move the market around a bit for a few days. But the recommendations themselves suffer from mean reverting returns such that these are not worth the subscription cost. This finding was of such importance that the Certified Financial Analyst (CFA Institute featured the research in the CFA Digest. Scott is currently working as a co-researcher with Professor Eric Powers on make-whole call provisions. This research describes the progression of the evolution of a make-whole bond throughout its life-cycle.
A Successful Real Estate Investor
Dr. Brown has extensive experience as a residential real estate investor. He has owned any managed over seventy residential 3/2 rental properties.
In 2005 Scott noticed that his rent-to-own tenants were closing home purchases with (1) unacceptable credit scores where (2) the banks were not verifying income and (3) appraisers were routinely submitting inflated appraisals.
Meanwhile other events that led to the movie “The Big Short” were unfolding.
Dr. Brown suspected a real estate market melt-down far in excess of that induced by the corruption of Senator John McCain in the Keating Scandal that led to the collapse of the real estate market in Scott’s home state of California.
Scott marveled when the gullible voting public allowed the republican party to promote crooked McCain as a serious candidate.
Dr. Brown sold out at the top. Those who did not heed his warning perished financially.
This forged by fire experience molded Dr. Scott Brown into and highly successful and experienced real estate investor.
